First, review the way you’re presenting the tool to the work. Make sure you’re achieving a cutting action by placing the heel of the bevel on the spinning work and then raising the gouge’s handle in order to engage the cutting edge. Make sure that you’re not pushing the tool into the work. If you determine that your technique is solid, the cutting edge is the likely culprit, so you need to make another trip to the grinder. Please don’t get frustrated because, if you’re a novice turner, you will almost certainly need to take a few trips back and forth from the lathe to the grinder before you get a cutting edge that performs the way it should.
When a turning is under stress, particularly when you’re knocking the corners off of a new part you just installed in your lathe, sometimes the point of the tailstock center will begin to enlarge the depression that the point has made in the part’s end grain. If that has happened, no amount of rasp work or light passes or anything else will reduce the chatter until you’ve gotten the tailstock center re-established. indd 47 3/18/08 1:18:42 PM 5 Making Arms S ome of the chairs I build are straight-forward reproductions of Shaker, Arts & Crafts and country originals.
The planing is done near the middle of the skew’s cutting edge. To make the skew take a shaving, I do the same thing I do with a roughing gouge — I lift the tool’s handle until the edge engages the work. You can see a shaving being lifted with my skew in the planing configuration (see photo 37). An alternative configuration (see photo 38) allows me to work in the opposite direction. This is necessary because planing — like all other lathe cutting actions — should always take place moving downhill.
