The Yankees in the American League and the former National League New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers were dominant in the decade preceding 1957, until the Braves broke the spell with their win in that second game of the 1957 Series. Game three took place in Milwaukee. Despite a homer by Hank, the Braves couldn’t hold their game together and lost by a whopping 12–3. The Yanks now held a twogames-to-one lead. In game four, the Braves blew an early lead and the Yankees tied it up in the ninth inning.
51 Hammerin’ Hank Comes into His Own In 1955, Hank showed the team that he could handle the weight of his new number. Slim build or not, the first half of his season earned him an appearance in the All-Star game. It was Hank’s first All-Star game of what would become 24 All-Star appearances. 314, had hit 27 home runs, and had 106 RBIs. He was also named the team’s MVP. Hank’s improvement paralleled that of the Braves, who finished the year in second place. They just couldn’t squeeze past the Dodgers.
Although it didn’t change how the rest of the world saw him, Hank was reassured to know his manager was on his side. “I never had a manager who cared more for his players or knew more about the game,” he remembered. His new manager was right. Every day brought new insults. Spectators and members of other teams shouted racist insults and dared Aaron, Mantilla, and Garner to lose their cool or perform badly. Pitchers even purposely tried to hit them with the ball, something that the three players never dignified with a reaction.
