Begin the installation by attaching a 1×4 fence board to the end face of one 4×4 end post. Set it to the height above the top rail for the 1×6 fence boards, then run a string line at that height to the sheathed 4×4 door frame post. 8 You now know the exact distance you need between the 1×6 fence boards. To make the installation easier, make a spacer jig to precisely position the boards before nailing. This eliminates the need to measure each gap to achieve uniformity and accuracy. 9 Attach 1×6 fence boards to the string height using the spacer jig.
First — only for interest — I set the length of fence at a slight angle to the existing adjacent concrete walkway. The fence posts and the posts that frame the door opening are traditional 4×4 ground-contact treated Douglas fir and the door opening has a framed header for additional support. The door frame sheathing and jamb stock are painted. The fence boards are alternating 1×6 and 1×2 tight-knot rough cedar. A Plan for Power Since things were going to be dug up anyway, I took the opportunity to dig a trench through the lower garden and bring in an underground electrical line.
3 Drill a small pilot hole in the center of the tabletop. Then, using a sharp Forstner bit and drilling from both sides to avoid split-out, drill a 15/8″ (40mm)-diameter hole through the slat. 4 Use a bearing-guided 1/8″ (3mm)-radius roundover bit and sandpaper to clean and finish the edges of the hole. Apply Exterior Finish As I said earlier, I like the contrast between the two woods I used for the benches and table. To protect against weathering and to keep the colors looking fresh, I applied a brush-on, wipe-off exterior oil sealer that I plan to reapply yearly.
